  • ‘Gulfrose’ appears to have a high heat requirement for breaking dormancy, however it is adapted to the mild winters of central and north Florida, overlapping the second half of the flowering period in ‘Gulfruby’ plum.  ‘Gulfrose’ is an efficient pollinizer for ‘Gulfruby’, ‘Gulfbeauty’ (U.S. Patent PP11,224), and ‘Gulfblaze’ (U.S. Patent PP10,873), as all require cross-pollination.  ‘Gulfrose’ is a productive bearer of firm fruit with blood-red flesh fruit, slightly tart skin and is semi-freestone.  Fruit set is very high and heavy fruit thinning may be required to prevent limb breakage and size fruit properly.  ‘Gulfrose’ has a higher degree of resistance in leaves, twigs, and fruit to bacterial leaf spot (Xanthomonas campestris) than does ‘Gulfruby and has moderate resistance to plum leaf scald (caused by Xylella fastidiosa).  Fruit of ‘Gulfrose’ are highly resistant to sun scald, concentric skin cracks, and split stones.
