‘Gulfblaze’

U.S. Patent PP10,873
Plum Variety

  • Fruit Size: Medium-Large
  • Chill Requirement: 250 hours
  • Growth Habit: Semi-Spreading
  • First Harvest: Around May 22 near Gainesville, FL
  • Description: ‘Gulfblaze’ appears to have a high heat requirement for breaking dormancy; however it is adapted to the mild winters of central and north Florida.  ‘Gulfblaze’ is an efficient pollinizer for ‘Gulfbeauty’ (U.S. Patent PP11,224), and ‘Gulfrose’ (U.S. Patent PP12,833), as these require cross-pollination.  ‘Gulfblaze’ fruit are medium large, firm, with orange-colored flesh and are semi-freestone with deep burgundy sour skin.  Fruit set is very high and heavy, and fruit thinning may be required to prevent limb breakage and to size fruit properly.  ‘Gulfblaze’ has a higher degree of resistance in leaves, twigs, and fruit to bacterial leaf spot (Xanthomonas campestris) and plum leaf scald (caused by Xylella fastidiosa) than does ‘Gulfruby’ (unpatented), while fruit of ‘Gulfblaze’ are highly resistant to sun scald, concentric skin cracks, and split stones.
