‘Southern Home’

U.S. Patent No. PP9,454
Grape Cultivar

  • Fruit Type:  Muscadine
  • Fruit Color: Black with no surface bloom
  • Target Market: Dooryard Fresh Fruit
  • Description: ‘Southern Home’ is an ornamental, dooryard grape with adaptability to the South.  This part bunch grape, part muscadine hybrid is unique in appearance due to its leaf shape and deeply-cut sinuses that resemble that of a maple leaf.  ‘Southern Home’ can be grown on arbors around patios and as borders on fences throughout southern regions.  This grape cultivar produces superior disease resistance requiring little, if any, fungicide applications.  It is highly resistant to ripe rot, bitter rot, and black rot and it is completely resistant to anthracnose and downy mildew.

‘Southern Home’ has excellent vine vigor, with semi-recumbent growth and 4 to 12 cm internodes.  Leaves of this cultivar average about 10 cm in length and 11 cm in width.  Lower leaves are light green and shiny, while upper leaves are dark green and shiny.  Ripe fruit is produced in Florida through October or November.
