San Joaquin ‘FLX-1’

U.S. Patent PP19,342
Southern Highbush Blueberry Variety

  • Fruit Size: Large
  • Chill Requirement: 400-500 hours
  • Growth Habit: Upright
  • First Harvest: Around April 20 near Gainesville, FL
  • Description:  ‘FLX-1’ is a southern highbush blueberry clone distinguished by its low chilling requirement, its vigorous, upright bush and by its very firm, sweet berries. Through multiple field trials, it has been determined that ‘FLX-1’ is best suited for commercialization in desert or Mediterranean climates.

In Florida, ‘FLX-1’ is excessively susceptible to stem blight (Botryosphaeria dothidea), which kills plants after two or three years in the field. ‘FLX-1’ also does not receive enough chill hours in the state of Florida to properly leaf in the Spring.

In field trials conducted in the proper climate, ‘FLX-1’ produces berries of very high quality, yields well, and exhibits a very desirable upright growth habit.
