  • Description: Plants of Flicker™ ‘FL96-43’ are upright, highly vigorous, and have shown excellent potential for evergreen production.  With a chilling requirement of approximately 200 hours, Flicker™ ‘FL96-43’ may be used for early-season deciduous production in Gainesville, FL, or for evergreen production in warmer climates such as Mexico.  Plants of Flicker™ ‘FL96-43’ are more vigorous and have a higher yield potential than ‘Star’ (U.S. PP10,675).  In experimental test plots in northeast Florida, Flicker™ ‘FL96-43’ has produced 5-8 pounds of berries per bush on plants 3 years of age or older.  Plants of Flicker™ ‘FL96-43’ have shown medium to good survival in the field, but have had some problems leafing in some years.  Flicker™ ‘FL96-43’ appears to have above-average resistance to root rot (Phytophthora cinnamomi) and average resistance to stem blight (Botryosphaeria spp.).  Plants of Flicker™ ‘FL96-43’ have shown no signs of cane canker (Botryosphaeria corticis) susceptibility in the field.  As a young plant, Flicker™ ‘FL96-43’ may have a tendency to over-fruit.

    Fruit of Flicker™ ‘FL96-43’ are large and attractive and tend to grow in very loose clusters.  Berries of Flicker™ ‘FL96-43’ are light-blue in color and have an average weight of 2.41g per berry compared to 2.0g per berry for that of ’Star’.  Flowers of Flicker™ ‘FL96-43’ are typically 50% open by February 4th in Windsor, FL.  Fruit of Flicker™ ‘FL96-43’ ripens early, and is typically 50% ripe by April 30 in Windsor, FL.  Fruit of Flicker™ ‘FL96-43’ require a medium amount of force to remove from the plant, and its sweet, mature berries retain quality for a long time while on the bush.  Fruit of Flicker™ ‘FL96-43’ have a small, dry picking scar, high firmness, and good flavor.
